Rhonda B.

$6,750 of $6,745 raised
Typically WGN helps people who have needs in the $500-$3000 price range. Rhonda B. was forwarded to us by another nonprofit in Wimberley, and we want to try to help her since she’s out of options.

Need:

Rhonda B. is permanently disabled and still manages to do a lot of good work in the community.  Please read her story and donate or share.  Her need is a new roof for $9275. The donations are restricted funds that will be used for a roof only. Dan Malin from Capital City Roofing, LLC has been working with us and keeping margins low to help Rhonda. He recommended that she roof the main structure of her house first for $6745 so that she is in a dry, safe home. Thank you, Dan!  With pledges, Rhonda has raised enough money to have her main house roofed! We will keep raising money for her breezeway and garage.

Thank you, St. Vincent de Paul of Wimberley, other nonprofits, and The Leaning Pear coin funnel donations, for pledging to help Rhonda get a new roof!

Circumstances:

In 1998, when Rhonda B. was 33 years old, she moved to Woodcreek North and built a 2-bedroom, 2-bath house with her now ex-husband.  Commuting to Austin, she had always been employed with a diligent work ethic, working first at Pepsi Bottling then Motorola.  After the tech bubble burst and she lost her job, it didn’t slow her down.  Rhonda got busy training for a certified pharmacy technician position, finding the career that she truly loved.  She enjoyed her job at the Brookshire Brothers pharmacy until one day she woke up and couldn’t feel her feet.  She refused to go on disability and tried to work part-time, but it was too painful to stand on her feet all day.  She still didn’t give up and went back to her former career in Human Resources, working at Wimberley Ace Hardware until her health problems became too severe.  Rhonda wondered how this could happen to someone her age, but the day she couldn’t walk her small dog up a hill, it forced her to accept her life had changed forever.  A long road of health problems led to a triple bypass in 2018 and to permanent disability.  Now the house that she’s been making the mortgage payments on for 23 years has an old, brittle roof that is falling apart.

Rhonda B.’s house payments are affordable, under $600, including homeowners insurance.  She doesn’t want to leave Wimberley and has strong ties to the community.  Although she is very close to her family in Houston, talking or FaceTiming with her sisters daily, she is tied into a network that is a source of support for so many.  Her good friend said, “She has no idea how many people she helps.  She is a wonderful person to talk to.”  Her family is not in a financial position to help her replace her roof.  Her brother-in-law tried to help when he drove from Houston and nailed on some shingles, noticing the roof was disintegrating and brittle.  During the freeze when ice on the roof melted, water leaked into her house. Sheetrock buckled in several spots and soaked the carpet.  Rhonda has tried to get several loans but she doesn’t qualify to replace the roof.

Rhonda B. gave us estimates from a list of recommended roofers.  WGN plans to move ahead with the bid from Dan Malin of Capital City Roofing for $9275.00.

Thank you to the Wimberley community, local nonprofits and Dan Malin! Rhonda B. has met her fundraising goal for a roof over her house!

In Rhonda’s own words:

"It makes me uncomfortable asking for things. I’m embarrassed to have to ask for something so expensive."
